Integration of "Art" and Literacy

April 2006

Art LaRue of Clark Middle School has spent the school year transforming how he teaches so that students in his Language Arts classes can connect more with the books they are reading and can share their understanding in creative and engaging ways.

For example, Art and his students put Rikki-Tikki-Tavi from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book on trial for murder. Students enacted roles as book characters, jury, and lawyers to decide the fate of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Other students filmed the events and then edited the film into a movie that was shared with parents and others in the school community. The movies serve as artifacts of the learning as well as discussion starters for future classes. To complete the tasks of this project successfully, students needed to have a solid understanding of both the events of the story as well as the motivation of the characters.

Art is part of a 3-person team at Clark that is working to integrate technology into their work with students by participating in a year-long professional development program called the Technology Teacher Leader (TTL) program. The TTL program is sponsored by the iTech department and is designed to inspire transformation in classroom activities in order to use technology as a tool to increase student learning. All 3 Clark TTL teachers are making a difference in student learning!
