Global Positioning Systems in the Classroom
Michael Warren’s Landmark class at Central Middle School of Science has been a hit this year. The Landmark class, an elective for 8th graders, utilizes hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) to navigate through parts of downtown Anchorage as their classroom.
“I am entirely amazed at how quickly students learn the technology and translate this knowledge into practical questions, statements, and understandings of geography and the Anchorage they are studying,” states Michael Warren. “Their level of questioning proves their understanding, and they are beginning to search for clear ways to communicate what they are learning to me, to each other, to their families, and to the community around them.”
Through a School-Business partnership, one of the goals of the Landmark class is create a “Geocaching Anchorage” brochure that will be available to the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau for tourists and residents in the summer of 2007. The Landmarks class is truly real-world learning that leads to real-world application.
