Developed by the SIRSI Orientation
Materials Development Team: Jeanne Ashcraft, Sharon Jones, Phil
Kline, Ellen McKelvey, Lynn McNamara, and Carol Todd.
The following materials may be used in training staff and students on the use of WebCat. The slides are available in PowerPoint for small groups or as a self-tutorial presentation. A hard copy of these presentations, along with a disk, have been sent to each librarian, along with instructions on the basics of displaying and navigating through a PowerPoint presentation. See a member of the Development Team if further information is needed.

Slide 2:
The new
library catalog is accessed through a web browser. You can access
it from any computer on the school district network, or from home.
Students without internet approval may be allowed to access the
catalog only. Students who wish to leave the catalog for other
parts of the internet, must display their ID card.
TEACHERS: Students without internet
approval may be allowed to access the catalog but will not be
able to visit other sites. Monitoring of students without approval
is going to be necessary.
Students who wish to access other parts of the internet must display
their ID card.
More eyes will be needed to monitor students use of the computers
since all of the computers can access the internet. We must hold
the students responsible for appropriate use.

Slide 4:

The first screen you get to is the
CATALOG screen.
You may make a QUICK SEARCH, the default - this allows you to
type in a search term or two
Or you may switch to a COMPLEX SEARCH. - This allows you to search
by combinations of several entries.
Eg. A word in the title along with a subject heading along with
an author
The boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT may be used to narrow or
widen the search.
Slide 5:
Keyword - looks for the presence of the word anywhere in the field.
Browse - gives you an alphabetical
listing beginning with the word you choose
This is good for title or author or subject searching.
Exact - if you know an exact title or author you are looking for. Not a very useful tool in our catalog.
Slide 6:

When you have entered your search
term(s) you must specify where you want the program to search.
EVERYTHING - is every field in the database
SERIES - eg. Dragonlance, sports hero's etc.
Slide 7:

Request: For Inter Library Loan or to place a hold on a book. Please ask the library staff.
Prefs: Minor adjustments for the viewing screen. Not for you
Slide 8:
In this
section you can access directly some databases that are very useful
for research.
WWW accesses other library catalogs outside of the School District.
In order to use these, students must display their ID card.
TEACHERS: Please instruct your students (and remind them) to take notes from the internet to ClarisWorks. (Copy and Paste) They need to be discriminating in their choice of material if they want to print it. Pictures should be chosen sparingly.
Newsbank is available from any computer
networked. Www.infoweb.newsbank.com username: 2096 password: 2096
Students can also access from home ra-2096
Once the password has been used on a computer it will remember
it.

If you
want to find out what you have checked out, this is where you
look. You may change your PIN number here so others may not see
what you have.
