Alternate Call Number

Note: The cataloging policy of the Anchorage School District is to utilize one MARC record for each distinctive title in the system. In concert with this standard is an effort to adopt one call number in ASD. Some exceptions have been in practice. Below is an explanation of the exceptions.

Initial classification recommendation is usually found in the 082 field of the MARC record. When you send in the WORLDCAT printout from FIRSTSEARCH, you have the option of telling cataloger your recommendation. Most of the printouts have a suggested Dewey call number some do not.

Cataloger will read your comments. The ASD call number recommended for use will be in the 984 field and linked in OCLC. It will be exported into Workflows for your use.

If the school librarian wants this call number changed an effort by school librarian will be made to reach consensus (but is not required) of other owners of the title. (Do not broadcast all ASD librarians e-mail boxes with this activity just contact owners of the title.) Whether consensus is reached or not, you advise cataloger of the outcome desired.

When the second call number is desired by a school librarian to be added to the ASD 984 field in Workflows, it will be forwarded to the cataloger. Once the second call number is in the ASD 984 field, you have a choice to make - the first call number or the second call number. Be sure and select the correct ITEM TYPE when you are adding your copy.

Examples of the 984 field: Library Resources will be using "delimiter c" "|c" for each call number.

Example 1: When librarian does not want to use Dewey classification for children's song and wishes to place in picture book section: 984 |c782.42 W |cE W

Example 2: When AV services has video and it is also in ASD libraries, second call number will be the AVS accession number: 984 |cV 973 H |cVHS5678

Example 3: When reference materials are wanted in the stacks: 984 |cR 503 S |c503 S

Example 4: When material is in the Spanish immersion programs at three schools. Past practice has been to place all bilingual and foreign language materials in the Dewey classification of the language. To accommodate the Spanish immersion program at sites, a second call number is reserved for these programs. Second call numbers are not feasible by non-immersion programs: 984 |c 468 M |cESP E M

The Library Resources Committee has reviewed the request to provide flexibility in the call number decision maintained at Library Resources. The above procedures have been designed for use with the request. A cost benefit analysis will be examined in the future concerning the impact of this request. It is anticipated that this adjustment will be small in number.

Procedural adjustments may occur in this process.
