Language Immersion Materials

Library Resources has made a provision for language immersion collections in a school library offering an immersion program.

Note: All foreign language and bilingual materials are classified in the appropriate foreign language number of Dewey, except for materials housed in a language immersion collection in a school library,

The Spanish immersion program uses superscript ESP above the Dewey call number and the home location data well is SPANISH.

The Russian immersion program uses superscript RUS above the Dewey call number and the home location data well is RUSSIAN.

In the case of multimedia for immersion programs the format superscript will follow the language superscript.

Workflows will provide both choices in 984 field if owned by an immersion program. Schools that do not have an immersion program will use the Dewey classification foreign language number.

Spanish: 468
Russian: 491.7

1. Library Resources will add the Dewey number to the 984 MARC field:
Spanish language
example:
984 |c468 W

Russian language example:
984 |c491.7 W

2. On the bibliographic record in Workflows when the item is owned by an immersion program:
The Dewey number for the item will be added to the 984 field and separated from the first call number by a delimiter: |

Spanish example: 984 |c468 W |cESP 598.2 W
Russian example: 984 |c491.7 W |cRUS 598.2 W
Multimedia example: 984|c DVD 491.7 Z |c RUS DVD 398.2 Z

3. In Workflows for immersion collections: Figure 1

  • In the Call Number field the call number for the language immersion:
  • Spanish example: ESP 398.2 N
  • Russian example: RUS 398.2 N
  • Home Location will be changed to Spanish or Russian.
