Kindergarten Everyday Mathematics

Pacing

Everyday Mathematics is the first math curriculum to make kindergarten an integral and critically essential part of the entire program. With the sixth grade goals in sight, the professors at the University of Chicago developed the complete kindergarten program in the first year. Every other grade level came on line grade by grade over the following six years. Every lesson in kindergarten was developed so that a secure or mastered concept would be in place by second grade. Kindergarten establishes the foundation for the entire program. Geometry, algebra, and statistics have their beginnings in the kindergarten program.

There are 216 lessons in the kindergarten program and the kindergartners are in school for 169 days. Most of the lessons range in teaching time from 10 to 30 minutes. Like other grades, full day kindergarten classes should spend sixty minutes in math activities per day; however, unlike other grades these sixty minutes will be broken up throughout the day. Daily routines, including calendar, weather, temperature, etc., lessons, Minute Math activities, games, and math centers all count toward the sixty math minutes in a day. It is very often possible to teach two or more of the shorter lessons at different times in one day.

Unlike other grade pacing charts, specific lessons have not been assigned to each day. Four lessons are posted to indicate about where the class should be in the program at the end of each quarter. Kindergarten teachers can best decide which lessons to combine to keep the program on schedule. While these are suggested guidelines, the success of these students in the beginning of first grade mathematics is directly related to the percentage of the kindergarten curriculum covered this year.

The kindergarten curriculum is the cornerstone of the program and all other teachers, particularly the first grade teachers, will be grateful for your efforts in completing the program.
