Migrant Education...

Is funded by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) under Title I, Part C -- Education of Migratory Children, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). In Alaska these funds are directed by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development - Title I/Migrant Education (TI/ME) and administered by the Anchorage School District (ASD).

The Migrant Education Program offers literacy learning opportunities for all eligible families throughout the Anchorage School District. At the beginning of each school year, survey forms from schools are received by the Migrant Education Program. From this information, potentially eligible families are interviewed to see if they meet Federal guidelines for eligibility for Migrant Education. If a student travels outside of ASD boundaries in pursuit of specific agricultural and/or fishing activities, he/she may be eligible to receive Migrant Education Program services.

Program services are delivered from three family literacy centers, as well as from seven Title I schools. Migrant Education family literacy centers are located at North Star Elementary School, Hanshew Middle School, and NorthEast Community Center in the south end of the Muldoon Mall, across from Fred Meyers. Children between the ages of three years and eight years are targeted for school readiness and reading instruction classes. Family literacy activities and Reading Is Fundamental activities are also offered at all family literacy centers. Additionally, family book bags are available to be checked out and used at home. An iMac technology lab is also located at NorthEast Community Center. Literacy instruction utilizing technology is available from the technology teacher at the computer lab.

Social services referral and support are available through the Migrant Education Social Services Specialist located at the A.S.D. Administration Building, 2nd Floor, Rm: 226. Assistance accessing appropriate social service and educational agencies is offered to all eligible families. Administrative personnel as well as those staff conducting eligibility interviews are located at the ASD Administrative Building, 4600 De Barr Ave.
