Connection Collections - Strategies for Introduction

Sampling the books…building community

Unveiling the C.C. Tub
Yes, creating a stir about the contents of the tub may be just the motivator you need to "kick-off" a lively study of literature.  Muse about the topic.  What does everyone know about this topic?  What will the books be about?  Does anyone know any author(s) whose book(s) might be a part of this collection?  Add a "go-around" to allow the sharing of stories that relate to this collection. (e.g., bug stories during the unveiling of the Insect Investigation collection, sharing a family picture during the Tribute to Families collection.)

Dashing Displays
Don’t let the momentum slip away!  Unpack the tub and display the books around the room.  Many of them can be grouped because they are the same.  Look for the read-aloud suggestions, the poetry anthology, a cassette or perhaps a video-tape.  Talk about the possibilities for using all of these items in your classroom.

Book Blurbs
Book talks or “book blurbs” about each title will create more excitement.  Information from the end-flap about the story and author/illustrator will help if you are not familiar with the title.  Invite everyone in the room to join you in "book-baiting".Strategies for Introduction

Smorgasbord Sampling
Set a timer for at least fifteen to twenty minutes and invite everyone to browse and sample from the displays.  Tasting a book means picking it up and reading a page or two at the beginning and/or the middle and studying the illustrations.  Ask yourself, "What makes me interested in this book?"

Musical Books
A take-off from the Smorgasbord Sampling.  Add music (perhaps the audio tape that came with the collection) to enhance this experience.  For yet another variation, have partners look at a book together and partner read.
