ANCHORAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA
February 13, 2009
MEMORANDUM
TO:PRINCIPALS, FACULTY AND STAFF
FROM: CAROL COMEAU, SUPERINTENDENT
SUBJECT:RECYCLING IN SCHOOLS
The Anchorage School District implemented a districtwide recycling program in August, 2008, assisted by a generous grant from the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services Department and in partnership with Alaska Waste and Green Star. The first year is focusing on the recycling of mixed paper. Other materials will continue to be considered and evaluated for recycling, as ideas and opportunities present themselves. It has been estimated that ASD has the potential to recycle more that 1,000 tons of mixed paper annually. This is by far the largest recyclable in our waste-stream.
As we have previously announced at leadership meetings, the program implements a three-tier approach which will have all schools and facilities doing ASD-supported mixed-paper recycling by the end of the 08-09 school year. Thirty-five locations were initiated by October 2008, and thirty-five more locations are in process to come on line by middle to late February 2009.Our circle will be completed between May and August 2009 for the remaining thirty five locations.
I am pleased with the enthusiasm already being generated, and anticipate refinement and continuous improvement from sharing of successful strategies and lessons learned.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle—these objectives highlight the responsibility of every ASD staff and faculty member to conserve resources, participate in, and encourage recycling in every school and facility. Necessary supplies will be provided by the district to implement and facilitate recycling. These may include, but are not limited to: collection bins for every classroom, office and work area; ‘Recycling Only’ dumpsters for the disposal of collected recyclables; and a roller-cart to transport recyclables from the building(s) to the recycling dumpster.
