Recycling program presents 2009-10 end-of-year report

The 2009-2010 school year marks the second year of the districtwide mixed-paper recycling program for the Anchorage School District. The districtwide recycling program was implemented in August 2008, in partnership with the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services Department, Alaska Waste and Green Star. Now that the mixed-paper recycling program has been introduced to all the schools and facilities, the program's focus has shifted from program implementation to increasing student/staff participation and decrease contamination. This outreach and education is critical to realizing the potential cost savings associated with recycling. Through ongoing education and outreach in the schools, the Anchorage School District’s recycling program will continue to grow, offering students and staff the opportunity to “do the right thing” and contribute to the ecological and financial success of the program.

The goal of the program is multi-faceted:

  • Divert mixed paper from our waste stream

  • Instill the ethic of good stewardship for the environment with our students and staff

  • Show financial benefits of an integrated waste management plan

The year-end report includes a program overview, objectives, areas for improvement, statistics and more. Get the year-end report (PDf).

SEPTEMBER 2009

Recycling Advisory Group reviews first year

Parents, students and teachers, along with city, business and non-profit representatives shared ASD recycling stories and reviewed the first year of the district's mixed-paper program at the September Recycling Advisory Group meeting. What worked and what can be improved? It was clear from the discussions/interest in how recycling was implemented at the different ASD locations that there is a need to share successful strategies and lessons learned in an easy-to-access location such as the ASD Web site. Discussions included data collection and the outreach campaign to increase participation and decrease contamination.

Goals of ASD's recycling program were revisited. Mixed-paper recycyling continues to be the focus of recycling at the district. More than 56 tons of paper were recycled in the first year of the program.

The advisory group discussed how other items are being recycled at ASD. Items include tin cans recycled by student nutrition, plastic bottles and aluminum cans being collected by volunteer groups, cardboard boxes gathered at the district warehouse and many other items.

Student involvement in the recycling program is one component of the district's recycling program that is making recycling efforts succeed. Having realistic goals, support from the district's executive levels and internal and external informational networks were also cited as helping the district's recycling efforts.

School-wide support, support from principals, faculty and staff, data collection and outreach were areas cited by the advisory group as ones needing improvement.

Polaris K-12 Receives ALPAR Outstanding Anchorage School Recycling Program

Each year, Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) recognize individuals, organizations and businesses who have made exceptional contributions to Alaska through their recycling and litter control efforts.  This year, Polaris K-12 received the ALPAR Outstanding Anchorage School Recycling Program for 2009, award.  Delana Eby, 16 and Natalie Wilson, 15, accepted the award at the ALPAR Awards Banquet last Thursday, April 30th, on behalf of their school.  Both Delana and Natalie, along with their fellow classmates Dayana Gallo, 14, Cynthia Gallo, 14, and Killian Roberts, 12, spent a tremendous amount of personal time this year making Polaris’ program a success.  Their program is an ‘All Community Policy on Recycling’ and is enacted and supported by students, faculty, staff and parents.  Obtaining approval for their proposed policy is a long process of presenting ideas and getting feedback from their three constituencies: parents, students and staff.   Congratulations to Polaris K-12 on their achievements in recycling, and special thanks also to their teacher sponsors who have also contributed much of their time to assist these youth in their program’s success: Kathryn Smith, Siri Khalsa and Joe Seitz.

ASD Recycling Program is underway

A river of waste runs through Anchorage, and the Anchorage School District has joined with the municipality in the battle to stem the tide by instituting a districtwide mixed-paper recycling program.

Currently, 28 schools have mixed-paper recycling dumpsters serviced by Alaska Waste. ASD Recycling Coordinator Amy Kirn-Leist is working with those schools to fine-tune their processes.

Kirn-Leist will help set up the program at every school and facility, but the cooperation of students and staff will be the key to the program’s success. She plans to enroll approximately 25 facilities in the program per quarter for the 2008-09 school year. Read more...

PTSO helps out

South High School’s environmental group, the Lorax Club, has partnered with its Parent Teacher Student Organization to increase the convenience of recycling at the school.

The PTSO at South provided generous grants to aid the club’s recycling efforts. Every other week club members collect all the bottles, cans and mixed paper from the classrooms during lunch.

“It’s reduced our schoolwide compactor haul by one load a month,” said teacher and club sponsor Kimberly Garner. “While that may not sound like much, it is quite a bit.
