Partnerships: Teamwork and Teammates in Action
Teamwork - Teammates. Partnerships. Relationships. Over the last 11 years, the
Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce have worked
side by side to create opportunities for the educational enhancement and
success for the youth of Anchorage. Strategies discussed and completed…goals
set and achieved…real-life success stories lived and
duplicated…teamwork…teammates.
In 1991, that first group of “committed citizens” was quite small. In fact,
during that first year, only twenty-eight formal partnerships were formed, and
out of those original twenty-eight, there developed a vision. By the end of
2001, over 500 School Business Partnerships had been documented; furthermore,
the National Association of Partners in Education brought its symposium to
Anchorage, complete with an active, local youth voice.
With the retirement of part-time director Jim Utter in June of 2001, the
position of director begged to be full-time. And so it was, in the fall of
2001, newly-hired Terrence Shanigan accepted the role of full-time Executive
Director. Terrence and the School Business Partnership Board of Directors have
begun to build new foundations for the Program.
Landmark Decision
First and foremost, ASD Superintendent Carol Comeau made a landmark decision to
have the Executive Director of School Business Partnerships work directly with
the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. Weekly meetings allowed for
updates to the Superintendent, thus having her more directly involved. Closer
ties were also established with the Executive Directors of elementary, middle
and high school education in the Anchorage School District.

Advisory Principals
It was suggested that the School Business Partnership (SBP) Board of Directors
include four principals to act in advisory capacity. Two elementary principals
and once each from middle school and high school were selected.
