Teamwork
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, is the only thing that ever has.”

Partnerships: Teamwork and Teammates in Action

Teamwork - Teammates. Partnerships. Relationships. Over the last 11 years, the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce have worked side by side to create opportunities for the educational enhancement and success for the youth of Anchorage. Strategies discussed and completed…goals set and achieved…real-life success stories lived and duplicated…teamwork…teammates.

In 1991, that first group of “committed citizens” was quite small. In fact, during that first year, only twenty-eight formal partnerships were formed, and out of those original twenty-eight, there developed a vision. By the end of 2001, over 500 School Business Partnerships had been documented; furthermore, the National Association of Partners in Education brought its symposium to Anchorage, complete with an active, local youth voice.

With the retirement of part-time director Jim Utter in June of 2001, the position of director begged to be full-time. And so it was, in the fall of 2001, newly-hired Terrence Shanigan accepted the role of full-time Executive Director. Terrence and the School Business Partnership Board of Directors have begun to build new foundations for the Program.

Landmark Decision

First and foremost, ASD Superintendent Carol Comeau made a landmark decision to have the Executive Director of School Business Partnerships work directly with the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. Weekly meetings allowed for updates to the Superintendent, thus having her more directly involved. Closer ties were also established with the Executive Directors of elementary, middle and high school education in the Anchorage School District.

Advisory Principals

It was suggested that the School Business Partnership (SBP) Board of Directors include four principals to act in advisory capacity. Two elementary principals and once each from middle school and high school were selected.

2001-2002 Implementations:

  • Electronic newsletters and updates to Anchorage School District, School Business Partners and the Chamber of Commerce
  • Surveys of principals for the purpose of documenting data
  • Assessments based on 40 Developmental Assets Framework, Alaska State Academic Standards, Workplace Competencies (SCANS)
  • Star Awards with Success by 6 at May Chamber of Commerce luncheon
  • Agreements and contract-driven partnerships differentiated
  • Opportunities for schools to draft their own agreements or contracts
  • School Business Partnership Student Board of Directors established
  • School Business Partnership Board Retreat timeframe adjusted to allow for adequate planning
  • Community donations by FedEx and PHILLIPS ALASKA, Inc. to establish employment of full-time Executive Director and part-time Coordinator
  • SBP Website improved by including Star Award information, complete listing of the Partnerships and Best Practices
  • Fall kick-off of SBP
  • Program focus: mentorships, internships, on the job training, contextual learning, experiential learning, and inkind donations

In conclusion, a tremendous debt of gratitude goes out to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, The Anchorage School District and School Board, PHILLIPS ALASKA, Inc., and Federal Express, my employer — Teamwork and teammates in action!
