King Career Center and The Artistic Team

Table of contents

This partnership was begun in the fall of 1999 when the King Career Center On-the-Job-Training program began placing students with The Artistic Team, an upscale hair design business owned and operated by Jeneva Cowen, a graduate of Chugiak High School.

Ms. Cowen is always eager to provide on-the-job training for students from our Cosmetology program. This is a wonderful opportunity for KCC students to work side by side with a wonderful and popular hair designer. Ms. Cowen is someone who values education very highly and understands that a combination of education and practical experience will take a person far in life. She is a fine business owner and also a wonderful, patient educator. She allows the students to have many different experiences. She is involved with make-up and hair design with models at local photo shoots and gives the students the chance to see that part of the hair design business in addition to the salon side. She imparts knowledge of a wide variety of opportunities within the field of cosmetology.

Ms. Cowen gives the students her time and the benefit of her expertise while at the same time encouraging them to do well in high school and to pursue post-secondary education. She makes it very clear to them that a combination of education and real world experience is important in any career field.

Ms. Cowen has taken on two OJT students within the same semester several times in her hair design business. It is not easy for a business owner to take care of their business and take on one intern, much less two, but Ms. Cowen puts in the time and the effort to do this for our OJT students.

We owe Jeneva Cowen a huge debt of gratitude for her efforts on the part of our students at the King Career Center and wish to not only thank her, but to recognize her as an outstanding School Business Partner in Best Practices.

The partnership between the King Career Center and The Artistic Team shows what can be accomplished when a business owner cares deeply about helping students who are enthusiastic about a possible future career field. Ms. Cowen is a rare combination of education and practical experience who is not only a great business owner but a great teacher as well. We are indebted to her for the valuable time that she gives to our students."

Dean Vogt, OJT Coordinator
"We are very lucky to have such a wonderful business partner who is willing to give so much of her time to the students. We have had many students go on to successful careers largely in part to the efforts of Ms. Cowen. We can never thank her enough."

Kristine Green, OJT student
"I was very lucky to have Ms. Cowen as my mentor in the field of cosmetology. She has given me the courage to push myself to new levels and shown me different career opportunities. She is always pushing herself to be the best she can be and being around her made me want to excel."
