Best Practices, Volume V

SBP Student Board of Directors

Table of contents

The School Business Partnership Student Board of Directors became a reality after the National Association of Partners in Education brought its symposium to Anchorage in October of 2001. Youth from the Anchorage School District had served as members of the symposium planning committee and attended the symposium. Developing the School Business Partnership Student Board of Directors seemed a way to accomplish the goals they had set at the symposium.

Middle school and high school students have served on the adult School Business Partnership Board of Directors since 1994. The adult board has enthusiastically supported an active youth presence in speaking engagements, writing newsletter articles, as well as serving on Board committees, so the establishment of a student board seemed a logical step. Most of the 2002 student board meetings were training and discussions on how to get involved.

Student Board Highlights

One of the items the student board acted upon in the fall of 2002 was to establish the student board’s first partnership with Shane Taylor, owner of Domino’s Pizza. Each month, Domino’s provided dinner and sodas for all in attendance. The partnership was so successful that the student board nominated Domino’s for a 2003 Rookie STAR Award!

STAR Awards 2003 Student board members acted as greeters for School Business Partnerships at the 2003 STAR Awards Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Stephanie Worley, student board member, was one of the keynote speakers at the luncheon.

One of the major milestones for the student board was to be able to host a summer-long fund raising booth at Saturday Market. Coca-Cola sponsored the booth. Funds raised are designated for student scholarships. The board selected "Clearly Alaskan" as its theme. Dana Hubbard, student board project coordinator and Ginny Cress, the student board coordinator took the major responsibility to design the booth’s calendar of volunteers, selection of items to sell, and the set up/take down each Saturday. Other business partners for Saturday Market: Big Game Alaska, Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau,
and GCI!

Dana Hubbard, West High freshman - Student Board President

"This year I was chosen to be president of the School Business Partnership (SBP) Student Board of Directors. I didn’t think I was a person to take charge, but now, after running some meetings, I have more confidence in myself. One duty I took on was helping to organize the Saturday Market with Ginny Cress, and I think the booth will be a success!" (June 2003)
