Associated General Contractors
The Alaska chapter of Associated
General Contractors is taking steps to
attract skilled workers to the industry.
With
Alaska’s healthy construction outlook for
the next decade and beyond and the
potential for a gas line construction project,
the task of meeting the hiring needs
of contractors is a serious issue.
Build Up! is an AGC of America and
Scholastic, Inc. curriculum for elementary
students. The curriculum introduces students
to construction careers and the
industry through challenging the students’ math,
science, and reading skills.
On Site! is the
new middle school toolbox
from AGC of America providing information
about different types of construction
and career opportunities through curriculum-based
lessons and hands-on
exploration.
For high school students we
offer the National Center for Construction
Education and Research (NCCER).
NCCER is the recognized leader in construction
education across the country.
AGC of Alaska is an accredited Training
Sponsor and the King Career Center is
our first accredited Training Center.
Gifted Mentorships
The Anchorage School District’s Gifted
Mentorship Program has provided services
to secondary students for more than
15 years. One full-time coordinator and
two part-time coordinators place 80-100
students in mentorships each school year.
This program serves all of Anchorage’s
secondary schools.
21st Century Community Learning
Center
The Anchorage School District is nearing
completion of their third year of operation
of the 21st Century Community
Learning Center (CCLC) programs. This
program was established through a three
year federal grant to provide safe, academic
enrichment after school programs to
assist students in developing academic,
social, and everyday living skills. Currently,
the program is held at 22 public school
facilities and provides afterschool enrichment
classes for K-8 students in core academic
areas through homework help,
tutoring, drug and abuse prevention,
technology
training, team building, social skill
development, recreation and the arts. |
Success by 6 Initiative
The Success By 6 Initiative partnered
with the School Business Partnership
Program and the Anchorage Chamber of
Commerce to raise the profile of the
Work/Family Awards and to create a business
community event to highlight the
importance of the collaboration between
family, school, and work.
Dimond High/USKH
USKH and A.J. Dimond High have
enjoyed a long relationship but have only
recently made the partnership official.
Each semester students who are enrolled
in the Computer-Aided drafting courses
have the opportunity to attend a presentation
by USKH staff on careers in architecture
as well as see the latest company
projects.
Campfire/O’Malley Elementary
Camp Fire and O’Malley have
created a
close working relationship. The two organizations
have become so interrelated
they function as one part of the school.
To
kick off our collaboration as a new partnership,
we decided to work together on
making "Absolutely Incredible Kid Day"
a day where ALL children in the building
were recognized.
