Best Practices, Volume VSchool Business Partnerships Best PracticesTable of contentsAccomplishments of 2002-2003Anchorage School Business Partnerships was proud to receive the Alaska State 2003 Civic Star Award. Recognizing that a community's vitality is intricately linked to the success of its schools, the American Association of School Administrators and Sodexho School Services annually honors one program from each state that has fostered positive relationships between schools and community. The first annual School Business Partnership Kick-Off Breakfast, "Building a Winning Team," was held on August 23, 2002 at Central Middle School of Science. More than 220 educators and business partners were in attendance. National presenter, Bill John, President of Odyssey Performance Enhancement Network, lead the group in team building exercises to spur enthusiasm for the 2002-2003 school year. Bowman Elementary Principal Darrell Vincek and Alaska Zoo Educational Director Katie Larson presented a School Business Partnership highlight for the group. Key Bank, Alaska Airlines, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi sponsored the breakfast, and One Last Cast provided a fishing charter in exchange for the breakfast presentation. Denny Bird of FedEx presented School Business Partnerships with a $5,000 donation for the 2002-2003 school year! Breakfast attendees were informed of the main SBP accomplishments for the 2001- 2002 school year: SBP President Terrence Shanigan worked directly with Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Pat McDowell; closer ties with the ASD Executive Directors of elementary, middle, and high schools; the addition of advisory principals to the SBP Board of Directors; the establishment of the SBP Student Board of Directors; and the first annual STAR Awards Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Luncheon with Success by 6 Initiative. Members of the School Business Partnership Student Board hosted the breakfast by providing the set up and take down of Central's multi-purpose room; they also acted as greeters and servers for the breakfast. Teacher Kathy Vik of Chugiak High School provided catering expertise and the table decorations. Finally, the 2002 Best Practices booklet was handed out to those in attendance. The kick-off breakfast was a great way to start the year on a positive note! Officers, School Business Partnerships Board of Directors
