Best Practices, Volume V

Lake Hood Elementary and GCI Cable

Table of contents

GCI-Cable and Lake Hood School have been school business partners since 1998. Under the guidance of the school’s Community Services Committee and the Lake Hood PTA, the partnership has flourished. Today, GCI-Cable is an important element in the life of our school.

GCI Cable

GCI-Cable has been a constant source of financial aid for Lake Hood school. Over the years, this partner has contributed monies for school projects ranging from technology improvements to t-shirts.

This past school year (2002-2003), GCICable donated $1,500 to Lake Hood’s Classroom Libraries project. The money is being used to assist teachers in purchasing materials for their individual classroom libraries, making them more inviting to all students - especially the struggling readers.

GCI-Cable has also given of its employees’ time and talents. Each year GCI volunteers have assisted with Back-to-School picnics, Open House nights, and Quarterly Awards assemblies, among others.

Cable employees thrilled students as they dressed as Dr. Seuss characters Cat in the Hat, Thing One, and Thing Two. They visited every classroom and later assisted with a school-wide assembly.

A Volunteer Readers program was initiated during the prior school year and it continues to be a part of weekly school events. GCI-Cable employees volunteer their time on Friday afternoons to read to students and to talk with students about special interests. Since its inception, 62 GCI employees have visited with students at Lake Hood.

Lake Hood students and staff enjoy sending this school business partner baskets of goodies and student artwork throughout the year. We also maintain a poster with pictures of current shared activities. This poster is displayed at the cable headquarters.

GCI-Cable, in turn, shares in the partner enthusiasm by decorating its walls with students’ artwork. (We have even heard rumors that this partner tries to match-up artwork with employees and their traits!) And we must not forget the wonderful Coffee Wagon that is supplied for the teachers on the last teacher workday of the school year. This is GCI-Cable’s way of thanking the staff of Lake Hood for its hard work and dedication to the teaching profession. We truly appreciate GCI-Cable!
