Best Practices, Volume IV

Scenic Park Elementary School and Wee Deliver

Table of contents

Scenic Park students are awesome! The "Wee Deliver" student mail delivery program is in connection with the U.S. Postal System. The fifth and sixth grade students of Robin Tozer’s class
excitedly took on the role of mail carriers at Scenic Park Elementary School.

Mail service began in January. The green mailbox by the office was bulging with letters, packages, and homemade envelopes sent to friends and teachers throughout the building. Hillary Spencer, a sixth grader who had been eagerly awaiting this opportunity, was the first mail carrier. As she lugged the bulging mailbox to her classroom, giggling students down the hall peeked through classroom doors.

The mail was sorted in two ways. First, addresses were inspected. Mail without room numbers were stamped “Return to Sender”. All other mail was rubber stamped“ Wee Deliver / In-school Postal Service”. These letters were then banded and sorted by class room number.

The best part was seeing the smiles on kids' faces when you walk into their room to deliver mail.Hillary then put all of the mail into the blue delivery bat, slung it over her shoulder, pinned on her official “In-School Postal Service” button, and walked the halls of the school. Faces lit up in classrooms as students opened letters from friends and teachers. Teachers even stopped her in the hall to tell her how cool it was that their students were eager to write letters every week!

For the rest of the year, a new student delivered mail each week. Students frequently asked these carriers when their next delivery would be, and they proudly walked the halls of Scenic Park school!

Here’s what a few students had to say about the program:

"It’s kinda neat. You tell friends things by mail, instead of having to go to their class." Leslee Rogers - 3rd grade

"I liked it that friends wrote back to me." Helen Gonion - 2nd grade

" I liked it because I can write as many notes as I want - and draw pictures - to
friends." Allison Baumgartner - 2nd grade

" I liked it that since I can’t talk to my friends that much, I can still write them letters." Dustin Fritz - 1st grade

Here are what a few of the mail carriers had to say about it:

"It was really cool delivering mail!" Samantha Edwards - 5th grade

"I liked delivering mail because you got to walk around school during recess." Rhiney Dube - 6th grade

"I love the way ‘big, tough, fifth and sixth graders" pin on that button and proudly walk the halls as official mail carriers. It is delightful to watch!” Mrs. Tozer - teacher
