International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1547

In their first year as a school business partner, IBEW 1547 took their partnership seriously and worked hard to provide educational opportunities, moral support and fun activities to the students at Denali Elementary.

The partnership began with a barbecue at the beginning of the school year dedicated to the newly renovated school. IBEW provided the food and volunteers to run the event and called upon their friends at the Firefighters Local 1264 to provide the barbecue grill and a fire truck for the kids to check out.

Let there be light! poster winnerEducational opportunity was provided to the 4th, 5th and 6th graders with a presentation about indoor and outdoor electrical safety given by IBEW journeyman wireman, Dennis Traylor and journeyman lineman, Terry Johnson.

Denali student Colton Collins won four passes to H2Oasis and the privilege of riding on the float that he designed as part of a contest IBEW held to find a theme for their float in the Parade of Lights event held in November. Colton said, “It was really fun being a part of the parade. I was really surprised when they picked my float design for the “Parade of Lights”. I found out after the contest that my grandfather is a member of I.B.E.W.”

IBEW members got together to provide moral support to students at Denali by writing over 400 postcards—one to each and every student at Denali—as part of Camp Fire USA’s Absolutely Incredible Kid’s Day. It’s a day when Camp Fire USA asks adults to send letters of love and support to all children in order to boost their self esteem and have a positive impact on their lives. Tami Phelps, Kindergarten teacher said, “The personalized notes to all of the children at our school from I.B.E.W on Kids’ Day were incredible! The children beamed when they saw a positive note with their name on it. The I.B.E.W. has provided incredible support for everyone at our school.”

IBEW helped to reward students by providing a pizza party and gift certificates from Barnes and Noble for those children who voluntarily gave up their recess to clean the lunchroom each day. Over 50 pounds of candy was donated for teachers to use as incentives and IBEW contributed snacks for Denali’s Idit-a-Read Program. The PTA was given 30 passes to H2Oasis to give away at their annual Halloween Carnival.

It was a very rewarding first year for the students at Denali, as well as the many IBEW members who contributed to the School Business Partnership. IBEW looks forward to many more years of having a positive impact on the education and lives of the kids at Denali Elementary.

Our school community is very grateful to the I.B.E.W. for all their support throughout this school year. They have definitely put the needs of our children at the top of their list, and our school community greatly appreciates that commitment. Marcus Wilson, Family School Service Coordinator
