This year we implemented the Learning For Life program at Fairview. Chris Tomsen, the Learning for Life Executive at the Western Alaska Council, Boy Scouts of America, notes that the program is national and one component is the elementary curriculum. Lessons were taught to all Fairview students by six staff members who used the program as their Alternative Model Evaluation. Classroom teachers reinforced the lessons in support of the program. The program addresses the “Skills for a Healthy Life” as described in sections C. 1, 2, 4 and D.1, 2 of the Alaska State Standards.

Lessons were taught from October 2003 through May 2004. Topics presented included Respect, Honesty-Trust, Caring-Fairness, Self-Discipline, Citizenship, and Life Skills. Our 21st Century After-School program focused on the themes of Respect and Responsibility which were selected from grade specific curriculum manuals. Pretests and posttests were administered to students to evaluate student achievement in social skills and character development. The data will show the growth our students made this year. Mrs. Donato, second grade teacher stated, “ The curriculum served as a catalyst to facilitate communication and open student expression.”

Fairview Elementary Principal Lois Mance stated, “The Learning for Life program provided actual real life experiences for K-6 students. Through role play and a variety of hands-on experiences students learned about the valuable life skill. Understanding and practicing the attributes, of respect, citizenship and tolerance, etc. sought to instill the importance of becoming a productive citizen living in a global society.”

We would like to thank the Safe & Drug Free Schools, the Learning for Life Support Group, Rodger Hargis and Chris Tomsen for supporting our program at Fairview Elementary.
