Anchorage’s newest charter school was extremely successful in providing opportunities for students to connect with the community through business partnerships. Monthly luncheons included presentations by business partners to provide an overview of the type of work they do and how it affects our community. Activities outside the school began with formal job shadows and internships that students set up with Jim Utter, Highland Tech High’s Director of Community Partnerships. Our partners include the following:

  • Alaska Hospitality Alliance
  • Alyeska Pipeline Services
  • Apple Computer of Alaska
  • Brenton White Inc
  • General Communications Inc - GCI
  • Porcaro Communication
  • Sicily’s Pizza
  • Subway of Alaska
  • Municipal People Mover
  • Totem Ocean Trailer Express, TOTE
  • United Way of Anchorage

A student and guest speaker at one of Highland Tech High's Business Building luncheons. At our final business partnership lunch, hosted by the Ambassadors of HTH (our student group facilitating the luncheons), many of our partners expressed interest in forming extended relationships with the students, including alignment with the mission of Highland, the skills of the students, and the opportunities offered by businesses. We are excited about the plans that are underway to begin to address the need for deeper connections that will directly align our mission of integrating business culture with academics to provide opportunities for students outside the classroom. Businesses will include students as members on a team on real projects; students will include business partners in their presentations of projects developed in school; technology skills will be highly utilized in forming structured student-led help desks for other kids, classrooms, businesses, communities and groups world-wide. Highland will continue it’s mission of connecting students with the people and resources in our community – Educating for Leadership, Educating for Life.
