Huffman's Librarian,
Judy Kern writes: "It
has been my pleasure to work with the wonderful volunteers
from Northrim Bank
for the past four years during Huffman's
Battle of the Books. Each year Tammy
Ferriss coordinates a group of Northrim
employees who visit our school to help
with this event.
“The Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan
reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored
by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The
goals of the program are to encourage and recognize
students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests,
increase reading comprehension, and promote academic
excellence.“ |
Huffman School
has been recognized
for wonderful participation by the students
as well as higher placing teams at
the district level. Our school wide battles
begin in January. They are held in the
library during the student's lunch recess
time.
Each meeting day, a volunteer from
Northrim arrives to help run the battles.
Jobs included timing, reading questions
to the students, checking answers, tallying
scores at the end of the sessions and
transferring the scores to a score sheet.
The volunteers have been a wonderful
addition to our regular parent volunteer
group. The students enjoy having the
Northrim volunteers help with the battles.
Huffman has had 7-12 Northrim employees
volunteer to help with this program in
each of the last four year. I have been
impressed with their willingness to take
on any job and their cheerful attitude
while working with the student teams."
