The Newcomers’ Center assists students with
improving their English vocabulary, speaking, listening,
reading, and writing skills. Students also gain content
and general study skills. American history and culture
is also taught so those students will feel more confident
and knowledgeable about their new world.
The Newcomers’ Center started a business
partnership with Sicily’s Pizza during October
of the 2003-2004 school year. Sicily’s Pizza
supports our program by rewarding our kids with a
free pizza based on their positive outlook toward
learning, keeping perfect attendance and in being
able to see long term results of efforts on their
academic work. Students put time and effort in to
succeeding before they get their free pizza.

Here is what some Newcomers' students
say:
Irina Telgenhof “I think that business
partnership with Sicily Pizza is
because it will encourage students to
study more and be responsible . We
need to study and work very hard for our
future. The students will try their best to
get a free pizza everybody loves pizza.”
Imtiaz Azzam, Counselor/ Teacher in Charge
“The Alaska Association for Bilingual
Education acknowledged the Newcomers’ Center
this year as an outstanding Bilingual Program in
the Anchorage
School District. Criteria used for this
award include evidence of attainment of
English Language Proficiency and academic
achievement of students.“
As a result of the SBP with Sicily’s,
the Newcomer students are realizing the
greater possibility of getting a free pizza
the more they want to exhibit their success,
motivation, and self-worth.”
Natalia Clark. ESL Teacher “The business
partnership with
Sicily’s Pizza is very significant to us. It
becomes a great motivation for the students
to study harder and get good
grades. Sicily’s Pizza also benefits
because they understand their contribution
will help the students get better
grades and will eventually become better
citizens of our fine city. The students
are very excited about producing good
grades so that they will be rewarded with
Sicily’s Pizza. Both the teachers and students
appreciate the partnership and
generosity with Sicily’s Pizza.” |
