The Star Awards

The 2004 Star Awards were presented at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, Make it Monday Forum on May 10, 2004. For the third year, “Collaborations for Success: Family… School…Work” was in cooperation with School Business Partner, Success by 6 Initiative.

The Star Award was initiated in 1996 to recognize an outstanding Partnership in the Anchorage School District. Over 600 partnerships have been established, and currently 450 partnerships are active.

To be nominated for a Star Award, a Partnership must meet the following criteria:

  • Enthusiastic School Business Partner

  • Commitment to quality education of students

  • Dedication to the continuation and success of the Partnership

  • Participation on a regular, dependable scheduled basis

Mears teacher Dustin Hawes was the inspiration for the Panther Pride Café Coffee Cart, a School Business Partnership Class (SBPC) program.

Shining Star Award: Carol Comeau, Superintendent of ASD

Photo of Carol ComeauThe SBP Partnership Board of Directors selected Ms. Comeau as the first to receive the Shining Star Award. A real leader knows that it is impossible to achieve success without a strong team. Leaders must rally the spirit of their team, and It is the spirit of teamwork that
has moved the SBP Program forward during her years as superintendent. She listens. She gets involved!

ASD Star Award: Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines logoAlaska Airlines has provided many contributions to the SBP Program over the years, but the 2003-2004 school year was exceptional! Unprecedented support has been offered in the following ways: Employee Services Manager, Karla Korman’s service as SBP Co-Chair, an open house and tour for King Career Center faculty, mentorships, assistance to update the SBP database, and facilitation of an ASD student-designed calendar project of quotes and artwork. Alaska Airlines recognizes the value of giving back to the community through its active involvement in the SBP Program.

ASD Star Award: Wells Fargo Bank

Wells Fargo logoWells Fargo Bank has a long-standing, positive working relationship with ASD. Throughout the years, the bank has established more than 14 Partnership agreements with schools throughout the district. It has contributed in the following ways: Bank on U High School Internship Scholarship Program, Bank Within East, Hands on Banking Curriculum, President Richard Strutz’s Anchorage Daily News article, community wide collection of school supplies and coats for children of low-income families, and financial donations of $112,880.

Star Award: The Alaska Railroad & Government Hill Elementary School

Alaska Railroad logoThe Alaska Railroad has been partners with Government Hill Elementary School for over 10 years. The physical proximity made the connection natural; the dedication of the railroad employees made it a success. Contributions have been made in the following ways: Annual Back-to-School Picnic of BBQ equipment, food, door prizes and manpower, holiday train trips, Spelling Bee and Science Fair judges, and the Railroad’s yearly Open House. The Railroad has been a good neighbor and friend to 500 students and their families.
