SBP Student Board of Directors

Table of contents

The School Business Partnership Student Board of Directors became a reality after the National Association of Partners in Education brought its symposium to Anchorage in October of 2001. Youth from the Anchorage School District had served as members of the symposium planning committee and attended the symposium. Developing the School Business Partnership Student Board of Directors seemed a way to accomplish the goals they had set at the symposium.

Middle school and high school students have served on the adult School Business Partnership Board of Directors since 1994. The adult board has enthusiastically supported an active youth presence in speaking engagements, writing newsletter articles, as well as serving on Board committees, so the establishment of a student board seemed a logical step. Most of the 2002 student board meetings were training and discussions on how to get involved.

Student Board Highlights

The student board established a partnership with Coca-Cola after they donated a booth at the Saturday Market for the summer of 2003. From the Saturday Market the student board raised $1,297. The money was used to assist other nonprofit youth organizations. Donations of chap-sticks and candy bars were given as stocking stuffers during Christmas to Covenant House.

Several youth from the SBP Board served on the initial meetings of the Youth Violence task force for the municipality of Anchorage.

West, East, and Chugiak High School have developed opportunities for students to become more involved in School Business Partnerships through their home schools with their school’s SBP Coordinator.

At this year’s Volunteer Recognition Reception, the ASD Art Department recognized 5 students from West’s SBP Student Board. The students hosted a breakfast reception for businesses to raise funds for the ASD Summer Art program. FedEx donated $500.

In May, the Student Board raised $280 from their participation in the Alaska Visitor Industry Charity Walk, and Chugiak High students raised $165 of the total amount!

Throughout the year, the student board had several guest speakers:

  • Coca-Cola – Ron Dodd
  • Child in Transitions – Trish O’Gorman
  • Kid’s Kitchen – James Kearse
  • Anchorage Promise – Cari Zawodny
  • Covenant House – Erin Case
  • 50/20 Run for SBP Board of Directors – Brian Griggs

A special thanks to partner Shane Taylor of Domino’s Pizza for providing free pizza for all the monthly Student Board meetings this year!
