Our staff and Costco have collaborated on numerous events to help increase parent involvement in our school. Costco has helped us facilitate and plan two major community events that turned out to be a great success. Costco played an important part in planning and helping at our 1st Annual Community Resources Fair, and our Holiday Open House/Reading Night at one of our resource shelters in the neighborhood.

Our Community Resource Fair was a success thanks to Costco. Dick Snyder rallied community businesses and resources to participate in our fair. We were able to get our Spenard Community’s Fire Department here, as well as several other resources that can help our families. The fair not only provided our families with a wealth of
resources, but the children were also inundated with delicious food and entertainment provided by Costco.

In December, Dick Snyder and his team helped plan and attend a reading night at one of the resource shelters in our community. Many of our students live at this shelter and we wanted to make connections with these families. Our goal was to encourage them to try and stay in our school zone when they were planning to move into their own home. With Costco’s help, our staff was able to have a wonderful night at the shelter. We had a great dinner, that Costco donated, and then talked about the importance of reading at home with their children. Costco invited teachers to pick out appropriate leveled books from their store to be donated to the shelter for
these children. Costco generously donated over $500 worth of books for the children’s room at the center as well as adult books for the parents!

Each year Costco supplies every student with a backpack full of school items. This annual event has been a highlight to both the students and staff at Willow Crest.

Costco has provided food for our students and their families on many occasions. Costco has been providing snacks for field trips, family night events, snacks for the school nurse to hand out, as well as snacks during our week of formal testing. They also donated many holiday dinners to families at Willow Crest.

In February, Costco invited a teacher to attend a reading training they were providing to their employees. Great conversations were held about the needs of our students as well as advice to help implement their reading program. Plans were made to start the phonetic reading program in the fall of 2004.
