Discussions were held
in the winter of 1997 between Bruce Bessler, manager
of Safeway - Eagle River, and Chris Boggs, parent
volunteer coordinator at Chugiak High School. The
focus of the talks was to identify ways that Safeway
could become supportive of CHS and help enhance the
educational program there.The actual partnership
agreement was signed on the March 24, 1997.
Last May, together with Shawn Duff, the new manager
of Eagle River Safeway, and assistant manager Gary
Crisp, we looked over the school needs list and SBP
Recognition Ideas. Our SBP Committee had come to
the conclusion that more focus would be given to
getting our partners into our school building and
then giving them as much positive publicity for this
as we could. Mr. Duff was very interested in this
new focus and quickly agreed to be our guest speaker
in the Consumer Economics classes for eight one day
a week sessions called Junior Achievement Leadership
Success Skills. He also displayed our senior projects
in the store.
Mr. Duff gave weekly presentations where students
learned about the basics of running a business, work
ethics, team cooperation, effective communication
skills, resume building, job shadows, and interviewing
techniques. They also learned about what school business
partners are and what they do in schools and what
schools can do for them. One student in this class
now works for Mr. Duff! Networking is now a reality
for this group of students and they can actually
see how it works. Mr. Duff has agreed to present
the JA program again second semester. |

Mr. Duff talked with the class about
how the holidays were his busiest time. When our
School Business Partnerships Committee next met,
we discussed what we might be able to do to help
out. It was mentioned that he always has a company
to come out and paint holiday scenes on their store
windows. We asked him if this is something he might
be interested in have students do, he said it would
be great. I asked our newly formed CHS National Art
Honor Society if they might be interested in this project
and they quickly answered that they’d be happy
to do this project in appreciation of Mr. Duff’s
work as a business partner with our school.
Additionally Safeway donates food to the Eagle River
community through weekly donations to seven different
local churches. They also help out annually with
the Bear Paw Festival and help with coupon donations
for our school’s activities program and other
fundraisers. As a business partner Shawn Duff and
Safeway - Eagle River has showed an exceptional commitment
to its partnership with CHS. This business partner
has connected learning opportunities for students
and provided professional enhancement for students
and staff members.
