Municipal Light & Power has partnered with Clark Middle School in a very unique way. Two years ago, Assistant Principals Linda Richardson and Sven Gustafson coordinated with ML&P representative Gary Fife to improve the safety bags that are a part of the Clark Safety Plan. This union between school and business enhanced the foundation for the current safety plan our building operates on. Specifically, Mr. Fife worked with ML&P to provide Clark with over 100 red emergency ML&P backpacks for our staff to carry out of the building in tile event of an evacuation.

The impact this gesture has had really is immense. When dealing with the safety of over 800 students and 125 staff, the ability to “grab and go” is essential. The red safety packs are stocked with first aid kits, flashlights, rubber gloves, and other items to provide initial care in the event of an emergency.

Earlier this year Mr. Fife and I revisited our SBP plan and are moving in the direction to further involve ML&P within Clark Middle School. Currently, ML&P representatives actively participate in the building design meetings that are setting the groundwork for the future of Clark Middle School and this community. The willingness of such a prestigious company to take time to coordinate their schedule with the timeliness of ongoing meetings attests to their thoroughness in their commitment.

We will be coordinating our 2006-2007 calendar with ML&P to further implement their mentors, tutors, and volunteers within our programs. Individuals and small teams of employees have expressed interests in organizing clubs, chaperoning activities, and assisting with academic tutoring.

Clark Middle School’s richness lies within the culture and diversity of our community. ML&P enhances the professional ties to our community allowing for future ties to grow between the business world and the Anchorage School District.
