South Anchorage High School is proud to add another school business partnership to provide outstanding opportunities to students. When we first met with Mary Fairbanks, Marketing/Promotions Director of the Dimond Center, we created a long list of possible projects we could take on together but we decided to focus on two this year: a Gingerbread House contest and the Turn Around Award.
The Gingerbread House contest consisted of three Nutrition and Food Preparation classes and a Food Science class, working in 18 groups, to bake and decorate a gingerbread house and winter landscape. Dimond Center provided the funding for all of the supplies for the project. The project took place in class the two weeks prior to Winter Break. Mary then came over to the high school to choose her favorites to display at the Dimond Center for the holidays.
“Students worked so hard on their gingerbread
houses, baking and trimming the pieces, whipping up decorator frosting, assembling the houses and hoping the roofs wouldn't collapse, decorating with wafers, candy canes and peanuts and finally trying their hand at landscaping with sugar cone trees, cookie sidewalks, and pretzel log piles. The final results were amazing and it was very hard for Mary to choose the winners to take back with her.” -Jennifer Ehrheart, SAHS Teacher

The Turn Around Award was the second joint project. This is an award for students who have been nominated by one of their teachers for dramatic improvement in areas such as academics, attendance, attitude, etc. There were three levels of awards with a $5 gift certificate for all nominees, $25 department winners and $100 for the overall school winner. Gift certificates were provided by the Dimond Center and good for any store in the mall.
“The Turn Around Award is a great opportunity for teachers to encourage students who have made improvements during the year. The student I nominated seemed proud to be recognized and showed the newsletter article to his friends.” -Cheryl Lovegreen, SAHS Teacher
