Alaska ClubDuring the 2006-2007 school year, Goldenview Middle School initiated a school business partnership with The Alaska Club. The partnership was developed after Robert Brewster, Vice President of Operations at The Alaska Club, expressed an interest in recognizing teachers and their contributions to the Anchorage community. Additionally, Mr. Brewster wanted to encourage staff wellness by their understanding the importance of exercise as a stress reducer.

Goldenview was treated to an extraordinary retreat at The Alaska Club South as part of their in-service day in November. The invigorating, half-day retreat was full of energy, fun, and team building activities to get the staff warmed up and ready to exercise. The remainder of the morning consisted of four, individually selected, twenty-minute exercise sessions that included yoga, Pilates, aerobics and weight lifting, to name just a few. One thing was certain! It was nice to finally have some professional development that required body movement!

As part of the in-service retreat, The Alaska Club presented each staff member with a one-month pass to the club’s Fitness Challenge. All staff was challenged to complete exercise circuits and other activities for points. Those who completed the challenge and received the most points were awarded generous prizes from The Alaska Club. Prizes included an iPod, club merchandise, and additional membership time allotments.

Throughout the event, numerous staff expressed appreciation. Afterwards, Leslie Moore, teacher at Goldenview, stated, “This was the best in-service day I can remember. I have never seen our staff so energized as part of an in-service.” This quote truly exemplifies the impact of our partnership with The Alaska Club. The Goldenview Middle School Staff was provided the opportunity to focus on their wellness and carry this back to the classroom. Teachers and staff recognize the ability to better manage stress through wellness and the importance of physical activity through team and school-wide activities.

This partnership has greatly encouraged the entire Goldenview community – parents, students, and staff – to consider the importance of physical health in overall well-being. Truly, wellness has become an even greater asset. Goldenview plans to maintain and expand this beneficial relationship with The Alaska Club.
