From Kenai to Fairbanks, BP is a formidable
advocate for education. Teachers
and students are rewarded through BP’s
recognition and scholarship programs,
and many school programs are funded
thanks to BP’s generosity. BP has proven
to be a valuable business partner for the
Anchorage School District, and for its dedication
the company has been awarded
the 2008 Shining Star Award.
Hundreds of students have benefited
from BP’s statewide scholarship
programs, which have been awarded
since 1985. Each year, BP works with
the Alaska Association of Secondary
School Principals to award 25 college bound
seniors a $4,000 scholarship.
One exceptional student, selected by the
Commissioner of Education, receives an
additional $16,000.
Scholarships are also available for students
who enroll in a two-year Process
Technology program at a University of
Alaska campus. Five to ten scholarships
are awarded annually.
These scholarships equate to an
annual contribution of nearly $150,000 to
given to Alaskans every year. BP is also a
major supporter of the Anchorage School
District’s Gifted Education program. Each
year, BP provides over $8,000 in grants to
fund the gifted mentorship program, sponsor
mentor receptions, and finance training
programs. The funds also pay for newsletters
and brochure publication. They also
have employees who mentor these students,
this year hosting three.

BP is especially supportive of the
School Business Partnership program. A
volunteer has served on the SBP board for
years, and the company hosts the annual
SBP Board Retreat at the impressive BP
Energy Center. A $5,000 annual contribution
to the program helps with the program’s
operating expenses.
The outstanding efforts of teachers are
recognized through the highly acclaimed
BP Teachers of Excellence Program,
which was started in 1995. Nominations
are reviewed by a panel of parents, students,
and educational professionals.
Financial awards are given to all honorees,
who then become eligible for the prestigious
BP Teacher of the Year Award. BP
has supported the SBP fundraising campaign
by purchasing “What I’ve Learned
So Far” calendars to give to each teacher
nominated.
BP’s Employee Matching Program
has an enormous impact on education in
Alaska, not to mention many other valuable
community services. Volunteers from
BP can be found throughout the school
district: helping in classrooms, mentoring
children, and even building homes for families.
What’s more, BP offers an employee
matching program that recognizes their
personal contributions of time and money.
BP’s donations of funding, time, and
facilities clearly demonstrate that the company
is deserving of the 2008 Shining
Star Award. Congratulations and thank
you, BP!
