SubwayThis year, Subway of Alaska focused its partnerships on two lucky schools: Abbott Loop Elementary and Susitna Elementary. In both schools, reading time is booming, staff morale is skyrocketing, and discipline referrals are plummeting. The impact of Subway’s partnership is obviously undeniable!

Coupons for free Subway sandwiches, platters, and Fresh Value Meals have proven to be motivational incentives. Susitna students have read over one million pages, earning coupons every step of the way. Subway’s support of each school’s reading program makes a notable difference in student achievement.

The coupons are also used to reward good behavior and citizenship. At Abbott Loop, students are given tickets when they are “Caught Being Good” or “Caught Eating Healthy.” Each month, five tickets are drawn and the winners receive a free Subway lunch with the school’s principal, Robin Pfannstiel. Subway also provides certificates, Fresh Value Meal coupons, and medallions to seven students each month (one child per grade level) to support Abbott Loop’s “Citizens of the Month” program. Over at Susitna, Principal Paul Wieneke reports that discipline referrals have been cut in half for each of the past two years

The Anchorage School District adopted a Wellness Policy in 2006, and Subway actively supports it. Susitna students and staff keep Healthy Future Logs, and each month five students and two staff members are awarded with certificates, medallions, and Healthy Meal Deals. Winners are selected based upon completed fitness logs and regimens. Each month, the top fitness class also receives a certificate or trophy.

Subway employees attend monthly ceremonies to personally distribute awards. They also help with special events, such as the science fair, and are active members of the PTA. Subway supports fundraising efforts in both schools, and has proven to be an incredibly generous business partner.

Both schools have agreed to make Subway the sole food product provider and partner. They hang Subway banners in their buildings and print the company logo in school newsletters. Students show their appreciation by creating artwork and thank you posters to display in local Subway restaurants.

In all, over 900 students and nearly 100 staff members directly benefit from Subway’s partnerships. Many thanks to Chris Wilson, Vice President of Subway of Alaska, and all the Subway employees who have given so much to both Abbott Loop and Susitna!

Abbott Loop student Adonna Jo Adams receives an award from Blaine and Shaun from Subway.
