How would you like to bring a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm to your workplace, while enriching the life of a young adult at the same time? This is possible thanks to the School Business Partnership program and the Anchorage School District Gifted Mentorship program, which gives motivated and mature students high school credit for work experience in offices throughout Anchorage.

Kallie Smith, a junior at Polaris K-12, has been working at the Alaska World Affairs Council this semester. She participates in Model United Nations and is interested in the field of international relations. Thanks to her mentorship, Kallie has been put in touch with Ian Williams, UN Correspondent for The Nation. In return, Kallie has worked on several computer projects for the staff at the Alaska World Affairs Council, including an informational CD that will be distributed to the non-profit’s corporate sponsors.

Dominique MacGregor is a junior at Service High School, and another participant. She plans to pursue an International Business degree after graduation, and ultimately hopes to work for the US Peace Corps. Dominique has been matched with staff members at World Trade Center Alaska, who teach her about Alaska’s role in the global marketplace. Dominique helps WTCAK staff with a variety of projects and trade-related research. WTCAK provides students like Dominique with real-world experiences, as well as an opportunity to meet business leaders in our community.

Students like Kallie and Dominique represent the very best possibilities for our future. Luckily, there are many more fine students who would benefit from a mentorship. What projects could these teens help you complete? What could you teach them? Would you enjoy giving these students a window into their future careers, while simultaneously opening doors of opportunity for them? If so, contact School Business Partnership Executive Director Tam Agosti-Gisler at 240-2345 or agostigisler_ tam@asdk12.org.
