Open letters to the Anchorage Community

Superintendent Carol ComeauI am so appreciative of the school business partnerships with our schools. Our students and staff benefit in many ways from our school business partnership programs, and I thank all of you for your efforts and support. On behalf of the Anchorage School Board and myself, I want to thank the volunteer Board of Directors and the Executive Director for their leadership.

In today’s world, it is imperative that our students realize the connection of their education to their future, whatever that may be—college or other post-secondary training, the military, the trades, and many other careers. Our partnerships give our students the opportunities to learn from successful businesses and industry in a meaningful way. Students are mentored by our partners, our schools receive financial and in-kind donations which allow them to enhance their educational programs, our staff have opportunities to learn how what they are teaching relates to various careers and jobs, and most of all, it allows our students to get to know many successful business men and women who contribute so much to our lives and our community.

We have come a long way since our School Business Partnership Program began in 1991. Those who began the program are to be commended for their vision and their willingness to forge the first partnerships. The program is growing and thriving with quality partnerships. Thank you for your service to our youth.

Carol Comeau, Anchorage School District superintendent

“Finding qualified individuals to meet the workforce needs of the 21st Century” is a theme often discussed at various business meetings. The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is proud to have partnered with the Anchorage School District to initiate School Business Partnerships in 1991. SBP is enhancing the city’s workforce reaching 49,000 students through nearly 500 partnerships because of the help of more than 1,000 business people.

Anchorage Chamber businesses participating in the program are enthusiastic and feel a sense of positive involvement. It’s an excellent forum for businesses professionals to interact with young people and to make a positive difference in our community.

SBP students are exposed to the inner working of business while using hands-on learning techniques and securing vital preparation for future jobs.

School Business Partnerships profoundly links the business and education communities, who are jointly working to make the city a better place to live, work and play. The Anchorage Chamber will continue to offer support for the Program’s continued success. Thank you to all involved for investing in a strong community.

Stacy Schubert, IOM, Anchorage Chamber of Commerce
