Ancient Rome This is an online, interactive choose-your-own-adventure style game in which the player selects an emperor to be, is given some background on the historic figure, is given scenarios in which they have to make a decision and options.  Includes audio, video clips and pictures along with decision options.  Some pictures may not be appropriate for younger students (ex. a picture of a mosaic showing a woman’s bare backside).  Best to review prior to using with students.

Ancient Rome – Women’s History

The lesson plan is developed by an organization called Women in World History Curriculum who saw a great need for usable lesson plans focusing on women in world history.  This lesson uses excerpts from Roman original sources to teach students about women’s rights in Ancient Rome as well as two occasions in which women used the public protest to get what they wanted.

Ancient Rome – Punic Wars (Hannibal from Carthage v. Roman Generals) This lesson from the Classics Technology Center, is a choose-your-own adventure type of lesson.  Students are given background information on the Punic Wars and using a printed out worksheet, select either Hannibal or a Roman General and make decisions as if they were that person.  This is an online activity.

This web site, created and maintained by the Classics Technology Center, provides links to brief descriptions of the history, origins and daily lives of gladiators.  Good information for students and teachers.

 

Unit 1: Greco-Roman World, Ancient Greece

EDSITEment – Lesson Plan Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 9-12 Ancient Greece – Battle of Thermopolyae This lesson, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, focuses on the famous Battle of Thermopolyae between the Greeks and the Persians (depicted in the 2007 movie 300 based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller).  This 2 day lesson has students reading Herodotus’ account of the battle, compare and contrast the leaders of the two forces and the countries they fought for.  Contains links to excellent visuals as well as providing questions for students to answer as they read.

This PBS web site contains four links to lesson plans created to accompany “The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization.”  Lesson plans are comprehensive and include all needed student handouts as well as providing details for locating applicable segments of the documentary for the lesson.  Lesson plan topics include: The two faces of Greece: Athens and Sparta; The Daily Athenian: A Greek Newspaper Project; Interview a Famous Greek: Reconstructing the Lives of Ancient Greeks; Oedipus the King: An Introduction to Greek Drama.

The Life and Labors of Hercules

Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 5-9 Ancient Greece – Heroes - Hercules

This lesson from the Classics Technology Center, examines the original legend of Hercules through a series of research activities and then culminates with a viewing of the Disney animated film “Hercules” and has students compete to see who can find the most errors in the film.

EDSITEment – Lesson Plan Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 9-12 Ancient Greece – Death of Socrates This lesson, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, examines the Crito in which Socrates argues that he should submit to the death penalty handed down at his trial.  Students read the Crito, examine and analyze the arguments laid out in the dialogue and consider whether the argument that individual rights are subordinate to the rule of law still holds true today.  Lesson contains links to the Crito as well as links to help teachers and students diagram the structure and flow of the arguments in Crito.

Primary Source: Library: Teacher Created Curriculum Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 7-12 Ancient China – Han and Tang Dynasties This lesson plan has students read an original source document “Lessons for a Woman” written during the Han dynasty and a brief account on a Tang Dynasty empress to examine the changing role of women in Ancient China.  One class period.
Primary Source: Library: Teacher Created Curriculum Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 7-12 Ancient China – Mandate of Heaven This lesson plan has students read an original source account detailing the Mandate of Heaven, which Chinese emperors used to justify their rule.  Students will complete a worksheet (linked to the web site) to understand the Mandate of Heaven and think about ways in which governments justify their rule.  One class period.
Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire: Classroom Guide 9th Grade World History, Asian Studies Teachers, grades 7-12 Feudal Japan (1700s) This web site contains 3 lesson plans designed to go along with the PBS documentary on Japan’s Feudal Empire.  Lesson plan topics include: Class structure in Feudal Japan, What is a Memoir?, Art and Literature in Feudal Japan.
The Japan Project – Japanese Culture 9th Grade World History, Asian Studies Teachers, grades 9-12 Feudal Japan, Samurai culture This lesson plan contains original sources, visual and written, and aims to help students answer the question of whether we should live by the values of the Samurai, and then helps them examine what those values were.  Includes a handout and discussion questions.

Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teacher for grades 6-12 Ancient  Egypt This PBS web site contains links to 8 complete lesson plans created to go along with the film “Egypt’s Golden Empire.”  The lesson plans have accompanying video clips (utilizing Real Player) and interactive web sites Lesson plan topics include: Hieroglyphics, Tombs and Afterlife, Queens, Great Leaders, Architectural Marvels, A Day in the Life of an Egyptian, Touring Ancient Egypt, Science and Technology.
Mummification – An Educator’s Reference Desk Lesson Plan Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 6-9 Ancient Egypt – Mummification Process This great lesson plan gives directions for mummifying a whole chicken.  The process takes 6-7 weeks and the lesson gives detailed instructions for preparing the chicken (removing entrails, rubbing it with salt and spices) through the drying process and finally wrapping the dried carcass in gauze and preparing a sarcophagus for the mummified chicken.  (Refer to this web site to compare mummification instructions as they may be more comprehensive.)
Nova Online.  Mysteries of the Nile.  Explore Ancient Egypt Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Students grades 6-12 Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom This PBS web site uses Quicktime (free downloadable) to give students a self-guided tour of major Egyptian statues, temples and tombs from the New Kingdom period.  Web site tells students what they’re looking at and gives suggestions of what to look for (kind of a hide-and-seek approach) in the Quicktime photographs.  Students use the mouse to drag inside the picture to see a 360 degree view of the artifact, as well as zooming in and out.  Best to use on individual computers, too small to project onto a large screen.  See this web site for the same treatment of statues and Pyramids from the Old Kingdom Period.
Egypt’s Golden Empire.  Special Features.  Hieroglyphs Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Students grades 6-12 Ancient Egypt, Hieroglyphs PBS web page and five sequential links that takes students through an introduction to hieroglyphs, guides them through the Egyptian alphabet, an activity where they can write their own name, shows them the Kamose Stela and translates interesting extracts, teaches common words and then invites students to take a hieroglyphs online quiz.  User friendly.
Egypt’s Golden Empire.  Special Features.  A Day in the Life. Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Students grades 6-12 Ancient Egypt, Daily life for different social classes PBS web site that gives students a written snapshot of what daily life (morning, afternoon, evening) would have been like for an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, nobleman, craftsman, priest, soldier, farmer, woman.  Readable, engaging and brief.
Lesson Plans – Tut Technology Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 9-12 Ancient Egypt – King Tut In this National Geographic created lesson plan, students will examine historical and recent research into King Tut’s death, including new technologies allowing scholars to learn more about the circumstances surrounding his death.  Lesson plan contains detailed directions and links to articles, a video clip and an interactive King Tut web site created by National Geographic.
Ancient Egyptian Gods Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, students grades 6-12 Ancient Egypt – Egyptian Pantheon This web site, created and maintained by the Classics Technology Center, provides links to brief descriptions and pictures of the gods and goddesses within the Ancient Egyptian Pantheon.  Good overview for students and teachers.

EDSITEment – Lesson Plan Ancient Civilizations, 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 9-12 Mesopotamia – Hammurabi’s Code This lesson, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, examines the context of Hammurabi’s Code as well as several of the laws themselves.  Students will learn about life in Babylonia through the Code in four activities: Hammurabi speaks: a simulation; Hammurabi’s Code as an object: stele, stele, stele; An Overview of Hammurabi’s Code; Hammurabi’s Code: How does it reflect Babylonian society?  The lesson includes links to the text of the Code as well as pictures of the stele and background information.

Conquistadors – Teaching Guide 9th Grade World History Teachers, grades 6-12 Spanish Conquistadors; Orellano, the Spanish Conquest of South America This PBS supported web site contains a link to a PDF file with seven lessons about Francisco de Orellano’s exploration of the Amazon River and the Spanish conquest of South America.  Lesson topics include: You are there, Amazonia!; Geography is everything; Orellano’s dilemma; El Dorado or bust!; The Truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth; The legacy of the conquest: film study; Indigenous people in the modern world.

PBS: Conquistadors – Cabeza de Vaca 9th Grade World History Teachers, students, grades 6-12 Spanish Conquest of North and South America, Human Rights This interactive PBS web site contains the stories of Cabeza de Vaca and Bartholome de Las Casas, two Spanish voices arguing for humane treatment of the Native American peoples.  The web site contains maps, quotes from original sources and excellent visuals to tell this important aspect of the Spanish Conquest of the Americas.
