STEPS TO BECOME A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER COMPLETE & RETURN SUBSTITUTE TEACHER HIRE PACKET TO HR: Return a completed Substitute Teacher Hire Packet to the Human Resources (HR) Department. Please keep in mind the notes below as you complete paperwork. Application Note: Your Substitute Teacher application form must be completed on-line at www.asdk12.org. If you don't have access to the internet, computer kiosks are available at the HR front counter. Transcripts Note: The minimum requirement to work as a Sub-Teacher with the Anchorage School District (ASD) is a Bachelors degree. You will need to provide original transcripts showing your degree awarded. The original transcripts do not need to be presented to HR in a sealed envelope. If you need to order a set of transcripts from your university or college, please have them mailed to your personal address and bring them with your completed packet to HR. If you have copies of your transcripts and also need to order a new set of original transcripts, you can turn in a copy of your transcripts while you wait the arrival of the original set. You can work only 45 days with a copy of your transcripts, after which you will need to provide HR with the originals or you will be restricted from further subbing. Letters of Recommendation Note: Please have these letters mailed to your personal address and bring them with your completed hire packet to HR. You can use the Letter of Recommendation forms included in your packet or the individual doint the reference can provide them in writing on their letterhead or other paper. Should a Letter of Recommendation be mailed to ASD directly, please bring in your completed hire packet, minus the Letter(s) of Recommendation, and let HR know they are being mailed directly to the HR Department. COMPLETE SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING: You must complete the following Substitute training as outlined below. To set up a time to attend these trainings, please contact Rebecca Brandt (742-3844) at our Training and Professional Development Department (TPD). You may also visit TPD in person at the ASD Education Center. On-line E-Training: This training is required for all Substitute Teacher applicants. This is an open-book learning module with a follow up assessment. Once the assessment is completed, the applicant prints a certificate and turns it in to the TPD Department. Face-To-Face Classroom Management Training: This is a required training for Sub-Teacher applicants who have less than 1 1/2 years classroom teaching experience. We do, however, encourage all Sub-Teacher applicants to participate in this training. This is a full-day training, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Training topics include: ASD Substitute Dispatch Procedures, ASD Policies and Procedures, Teaching Expectations, Avoiding Traps-Defusing Anger, Special Education students in the classroom, Hands-on experiences with strategies and skills, Sub-Pack planning-including sponge activities, Safety, Emergency and Evacuation, Mandatory trainings, i.e. Blood Borne Pathogens, Child Abuse Reporting, EEO-Sexual Harassment, Code of Ethics. IMPORTANT!! THE SUB DISPATCH OFFICE WILL CALL AND GIVE YOU YOUR PIN NUMBER: After completion of your Sub-Teacher Training and submission of a completed hire packet, the Sub-Dispatch office will call you and provide you with a PIN number. Your PIN number will give you access to the Sub Finder System. You may not begin subbing until Sub-Dispatch has released you to begin work by giving you a PIN number. Delays may occur if your hire packet is incomplete or you have not yet completed all your training. If you have any questions, please call Sub-Dispatch at 742-4128 or 742-4133. |
