Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited error of metabolism
caused by a deficiency in the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. Loss
of this enzyme results in mental retardation, organ damage, unusual
posture and can, in cases of maternal PKU, severely compromise pregnancy.
