Child in Transition/Homeless (CIT/H) Project

CIT/H is an integral part of the Anchorage School District's Title I Program which provides services throughout the district to homeless children and youth. Our goal is to promote school stability and success for homeless students. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvements ActThis link will open in a new window, which was reauthorized as part of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002, guides our decisions in determining eligibility and the services we provide.

CIT/H in the Anchorage community

In the 2010-11 school year, more than 3,800 homeless children and youth were identified by CIT/H in the Anchorage community. Of these, more than 2,400 were enrolled as students in the Anchorage School District. The CIT/H staff collaborates with ASD teachers, principals, nurses and counselors, as well as community agencies to serve homeless students and their families. In the elementary schools, a key building contact person serves as a primary link between the program and the school.

In addition to the children and youth temporarily residing in shelters, the CIT/H Project also works with children and youth who stay in other transitional living situations such as tents, campgrounds, motels, cars or with friends. Our staff works with parents to assist them with their roles as first educator, helper and advocate in their child's continuing educational experience.

Students in homeless situations have the right to a free and appropriate public education. Learn more »
