2009-10 Charitable Giving reports

ASD 2009 Charitable Giving Campaign exceeds $335,000 goal

Helping to prevent hunger, homelessness, drug addiction and abuse in our community, ASD employees contributed more than $337,000 to the 2009 Charitable Giving Campaign conducted in October, exceeding the goal of $335,000. About 1,700 employees, or 26 percent, contributed to the campaign, with an average gift of $194.

The Anchorage Schools Fund received more than $7,500 because many donors opted to donate the cost of their incentive gifts in lieu of receiving one. The fund, introduced to the campaign last year, is an endowment managed by the Alaska Community Foundation to provide grants in support of innovative classroom projects, after-school programs and other needs that enhance the success of ASD students as identified by teachers, counselors, nurses, coaches and other staff.

This year’s theme, “Recipe for Success: The key ingredient is you!”, designed by ASD Publications Technician Pam Butcher, encouraged many of the 135 on-site campaign coordinators to hold lunches and other food-related fundraisers in addition to gathering pledges from their co-workers.

Three schools achieved an impressive 100 percent participation rate, or higher in the case of SAVE High School, chaired by Holly Adkins, which achieved 115 percent with participation of long-time substitutes. The others included Girdwood K-8, chaired by Joan Lower and Frontier Charter School, chaired by Tim Scott.

Five groups raised more than $500 per donor, including College Gate Elementary, chaired by Erin Peterson with the highest per capita pledge of $585, followed by Facilities, chaired by Jackie Gay and Tracy West; Wendler Middle School, chaired by Walter Weaver; Education Center-Central, chaired by Rebecca Brandt; and Chugiak Elementary, chaired by Stacy Flagg.

In the elementary school division, Huffman Elementary, chaired by Ruth Mandsager, raised the most money with more than $7,000 pledged and an average gift of $468. Northern Lights ABC, chaired by Brenda Barnett, raised more than $6,000 and Gladys Wood Elementary, chaired by Todd Dietsch, raised more than $5,800.

In the middle school division, Mears Middle School, chaired by Debbie Worthington, raised the most with more than $7,500 pledged and an average gift of $237. Goldenview Middle School, chaired by Kim Barnes, brought in more than $5,000 and Hanshew Middle School, chaired by Moriah Huseman, brought in more than $4,000.

In the secondary school division, East High School, chaired by Kerry Brown, brought in the most money at more than $15,800 with an average pledge of $294. Service High, chaired by Heather Jeffords and Dimond High, chaired by Christine Bouffard-Fisher each brought in more than $8,500.

In the charter school division, Alaska Native Cultural K-6, chaired by Angela Blue, raised the most with more than $2,700 and an average gift of $232. Aquarian, chaired by Lisa Botero followed with more than $1,900 in pledges. Eagle Academy, chaired by Molly Deming, raised more than $800.

In the support services division, the Education Center brought in the most pledges with Central Division, chaired by Rebecca Brandt, raising more than $22,800 with an average gift of $520, followed by East Division, chaired by Terri Schweizer, with more than $11,000, and West Division, chaired by Lois Hartsfield, with more than $10,000. Operations, chaired by Bob Davis, followed with more than $7,400 pledged, and Facilities, chaired by Jackie Gay and Tracy West, with more than $7,300.
