Welcome to the new school year, 2013-14. My name is Ms. Lisa Johnstone; I am the Primary grades(K-3) Special Education Extended Resource Teacher at Homestead
Elementary. This is my 13th year with the district; I am a born and raised Alaskan and product of the Anchorage School District myself!
My classroom team is Mrs. Mar Lou Swan and Mrs. Terry Eng. They are terrific T.A.'s and really make our team cohesive. I am a lucky lady and am grateful to them for
their hard work and dedication to the kiddos in this program. It is VERY hard work and a whirlwind of decision making day after day. They have to be on their toes all day long
with challenges both academically and behaviorally with multi-age levels, grade levels and ability levels. I THANK YOU!
I am excited to begin the year with those who are moving up into the big world of Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. Some of our friends are returning and others are
new friends that are excited to be joining us in a new class in a new school. This is our 7th year at Homestead and they have been very welcoming to our program. This is a
terrific school. We also have a partner class this year, Ms. Wiley's Kindergarten class. I teach SEL (Social Emotional Learning skills) which we call "Social Studies" and on
alternate days Ms. Wiley teaches Science with us all. It is so much fun team teaching with these kiddos. Our classes learn a lot from each-other, Life Skills, Social Skills, and
so much more.
We have tons of things to accomplish this year; new academic skills, new IEP goals and objectives, and new ways to approach them all. If you have a strategy that you
know works for your child, please let us know as it will benefit both your child and the team in the classroom. Any history regarding academics or personal information that
you would like to share is helpful in getting to know your child and making them feel comfortable and motivated to do their best at school. It lets your child know that we are all
a team working toward a mutual goal of being successful participants in society when they graduate.
As I am a Special Educator, your child's IEP and personal information are confidential. This website is purely to try and give a "heads up" to parents and students of how
our class works and a brief description of the program. I will not be able to email grades or other confidential information. If you need to contact me you may send an email or
call. My office hours this year are: 3:30-4:30 p.m. daily. If you need to make an appointment, please notify me ASAP. This site will only be updated at the beginning of the
year, but I will advise you of important events, homework, and special projects your student may have up coming throughout the year with classroom newsletters and daily
logs sent home most every night.
If you are a parent who likes to be involved at the school level, please let me know when you are available. Please make an appointment to stop in and familiarize yourself
with the staff and the building. You must check in/out with the office to receive your guest pass and to notify them that you are here in case of any emergency situation.
We look forward to working with you and hope that you feel comfortable enough to participate sometime throughout the year. We love helpers!
Thank you- Have a great year!
