Hello to all Students and Parents, Welcome to a great new year in science. I've got a full and exciting curriculum planned. In Geology I will be working with Mr. Berglund again to create a dynamic Geology Curriculum. We will focus on an overview of the Earth's Systems, tying them all back to the core principle of Geology - Plate Tectonics. We will start the year with a review of the Earth's origins, then make use of the good weather to do some field work in the Chester Creek Watershed. After this we will study rocks and minerals, all aspects of plate tectonics, map reading, mining and petroleum geology, and geologic hazards. We work hard to tie these subjects directly to Alaska, but also try to give the students a global perspective. We work hard to make the course as hands-on as possible. West High has an excellent Chemistry curriculum, well designed to prepare students for upper level sciences and college chemistry. It is a rigorous course requiring steady work and well developed math skills. Algebra I is a prerequisite - you will need those skills. Our chemistry curriculum is a hands-on, lab-based course. It should prove to be one of the more challenging courses of your student's academic career. Study hard. Enjoy your year, Mr. Burnham
