MARY PETERBURS

Hi folks and welcome back to school. I'm looking forward to a fantastic year! Our goal in Career and Technology is to exit each student with marketable skills he/she
can use in everyday adult life. I have the pleasure of teaching all elective courses. I believe these courses should enhance student success, not add to the burden of
their workload, so usually I do not assign homework. We do have daily assignments in each class and when your student is absent, he/she is responsible for making
arrangements with me to make up the missed work. Ordinarily I am available during lunch and right after school.

My Schedule:
Period 1--Conference
Period 2--School Business Partnerships Coordination
Period 3--School Business Partnerships Class
Period 4--Textile Tech (Costume Design)
Period 5--Textile Tech
Period 6--Technical Writing
School Business Partnerships--This class is project based. It is a combination of service learning, volunteerism and employment education. Our goal is to facilitate close communication between our students and successful business people in the community. We currently have 14 business partners: WalMart Midtown, USKH, Carrs Aurora Village, House of Harley Davidson, The Northern Forum, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Alaska Teen Media Institute, Credit Union 1, Anchorage Concert Association, MEDIAK, TBA Theatre, The Anchorage Opera, The Alaska Club West and Great Harvest Bread Co. Our students and business partners participate in a variety of community activities including: United Way Day of Caring food drive, City of Lights, Kids' Closet Clothing Drive, Coats for Kids and Clean Sweep. They also assess their interests and skills, learn how to conduct a job search, create a resume' and coverletter and complete at least one mock job interview.

Textile Tech--Students learn to sew, knit, crochet and weave. This course can be taken up to 4 times, Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. The course is project based. Requirements are more difficult with each level. Level 1 students master 4 knitting stitches and complete a simple project, master the sewing machine and complete a patchwork pillow and a pair of pull-on pj bottoms and weave a potholder.

Textile Tech (Costume Design)--Students focus primarily on sewing, laundering, pattern-making, fitting and pressing as we strive to assist Mr. Block and his actors. This year we will costume "The Jungle Book," "Return to the Forbidden Planet" and "The Tamer Tamed."

Technical Writing--Workplace writing provides an outlet for authentic communication and engages students with real world applications.

I look forward to meeting you at Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. E-mail is the best peterburs_mary@asdk12.org

Have a fabulous 2009.

Mary Peterburs
