Welcome both students and parents to Mrs. Morton's English classes!

I hope that we will have a very productive year learning, cooperating and growing together. I look forward to experiencing the joy that comes with learning. I hope every day can be a day of new and exciting experiences..

I am available to help students at lunch time and after school. Any concerns students have are best addressed privately at lunch or after school. Parents may contact me via e-mail, and I will do my very best to answer promptly.

Extra credit will never substitute for credit students have failed to earn, or for missing work. Let's concentrate on getting our work done in a timely manner.

The homework I usually assign is reading 3 chapters nightly from the novels we are covering in class. Any work not completed in class can be taken home for completion for those students who require more time or are more meticulous. Most of the writing we will be doing will be in-class, timed writing to a specified prompt. I will be as gentle and nurturing as possible. I know how much these kids stress over their school work, God love 'em. They always mange to rise up to my expectations.

I usually give a study guide while reading the novels so that the students will recall what they read, and to further discussion in class. Other work will be given to enhance and enrich the novel we are studying. This includes vocabulary, critical thinking, literary analysis and occasional creative pieces. We will have a quiz the day after the reading is assigned. If students are absent, they should go ahead and read three chapters as to not get behind in the reading. A comprehensive test over the novel will be given, along with an expository essay or essay questions. All work done on the novel will be collected, graded and points given. We will do grammar to improve the quality of our writing and speaking. Poetry and plays will also be presented. All novel units revolve around a comprehensive theme as stated in my course description which was sent home with the students.

I will try to update my grades with as much regularity as possible, but I must be honest in saying that I may not do it every week. I often want to finish my pile of grading before I update to give as accurate a picture as possible of students' progress. If students show zeroes on some work, it is not fair to allow them to make up the work after the fact. Meeting deadlines and dilligence in completing work on time is part of the growing process. I think we need to help make our kids more responsible by stressing the importance of dilligence. I also think we do a disservice to the dilligent students who always complete their work on time and never miss assignments by allowing others to slack off. If there are extenuating circumstances, please let me know how I can help.

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have concerning your child. I am dedicated to their success in my class.
