First Grade is an exciting year! Chldren learn to read! They learn to write D'Nealian letters correctly and to write stories. They use Everyday Mathematics to expand their math skills. They expand their knowledge of the world around them by learning about self, family, school, and neighborhood. In Science, they study Alaskan animals and watersheds, as well as balancing and weighing. They master self-help skills: tying shoes, zipping coats, snapping, and managing winter clothing by themselves. Children also develop important skills and habits that affect their future years in school: completing homework, being organized, studying for tests, cooperating with peers, helping others, accepting responsibility for themselves, being respectful, and caring forothers, for their school, and for their community.
