KATHERIN EAKES

Hello and welcome to Central Middle School of Science Orchestra! We have two intermediate classes designed for students who have completed one year of string technique, and one advanced class for students who have two or more years of string technique and open to both grades. I have high expectations of my students and never am disappointed when they perform beautifully at concerts. We are planning on having a day concert in October and a day and evening concert in December. In February students are encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble. It is an extracurricular activity in which students perform in small groups, or even a solo if they take private lessons, and get assessed by an adult string performer. The students receive comments on their strengths and weaknesses. This is the beginning of a very important part of a life long investment in string playing. In March two or three parts of the music department, orchestra and choir, choir and band, or all three, take some of the students on a tour of the elementary schools that feed into Central and some times we are able to make an appearance at the Pioneer Home. In May we end the year with a day and an evening concert. My name is Mrs. Katie Eakes and I've made a home at Central even though I teach at other schools in the morning. I enjoy my job here very much. I play Bass professionally in the Anchorage Symphony and this year I'm contracted to play with the Anchorage Opera as well. I was a contracted member of the Lubbock, TX Symphony Orchestra before I left college. I studied Bass with Paul Sharpe, originally of Anchorage, at Texas Tech University for six years. There I participated in the a program funded by the American String Teachers Association and the college called the Texas Tech String Project. I started group teaching fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in January 2001 and I've been working with students of all ages, including college students, ever since. I have a wonderful husband who works on the North Slope dealing with X-ray and Ultra sound pipe inspection. I also have a little boy who will be a year in October 2009. Shane is the baby in my picture. My family is amazing! If you ever need to contact me, email is the best way since I am a traveling teacher. Please don't hesitate even if you just want to keep me up dated on your child. Parents after all are our children's first teachers. eakes_katherin@asdk12.org (Katherin without the "e" at the end)
