Welcome to preschool!

My name is Robyn Meyer and this is my 18th year teaching. 15 of these years have been in preschool special education. I enjoy working with our youngest learners and feel very strongly that early intervention works for students who experience developmental delays or disabilities.

Preschool Special Education classes are offered in select elementary schools throughout the Anchorage School District. Northwood ABC currently hosts 3 special education preschool classrooms.

SPECIAL EDUCATION, PRESCHOOL CLASSROOMS
To be admitted into our Special Education Preschool program, students must demonstrate delays in their communication, motor, behavior, self-care, or social skills. If you have concerns about how your child, moves, speaks, understands directions, behaves, or interacts with others, you can contact the Child Check program at the Early Intervention Services Center. Their phone number is 742-2655. They offer both screenings and testing of preschool-aged children to determine those that might have delays in development or possible problems with their ability to learn. If identified, the district will place children into a special education program that would best serve their needs. Programs are typically located as close to the child's home school as possible.

BUDDY BEARS
The Buddy Bear program is for typically developing children who do not have a disability or delay. Their role in the preschool special education classroom is to serve as role models for speech, anguage and social behaviors and to provide opportunities for the preschool children with special needs to have interactions with their typical peers. Buddy Bears should be strong language models. They attend either a morning session from 9-11am or an afternoon session from 1:30-3:30pm.

Buddy Bear applications for the 2013-2014 school year will be accepted at the Northwood ABC front office. Applicants are selected depending upon the needs of each classroom, and potential Buddy Bears must pass a screening. The number of Buddy Bear positions is determined by the Special Education Department and supervisors. In the past 2 years there have been 2 Buddy Bears allocated per preschool classroom. The cost is $75 per year.

The Buddy Bear program is NOT provided at every special education preschool site. This program is offered at the discretion of the principal and preschool staff at each location.

Please call or email me if you have any questions or are interested in our program!
