“Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss

Welcome to 7th grade Language Arts. I am delighted to begin this year’s language arts journey with you. I believe that each and every one of you has the ability to learn and achieve success in this classroom. I will hold you to high standards and I have every
confidence that you will rise to meet the challenge.

I.     COURSE OVERVIEW

Fulfilling the language arts requirement for seventh grade students in the Anchorage School District, this full-year Language Arts course is designed to enhance your proficiency in the core areas of reading, writing, language, listening, and speaking. To become
college and career ready, you will engage in the close reading of high quality works of varying lengths, including literary nonfiction, classics of American and European literature, short stories, and seminal documents of American history. Reading instruction will
include in-depth analysis of the elements of fiction and nonfiction, literary and sound devices, the development of theme and ideas, and word origins. Other areas of emphasis in reading will include the comparison and contrast of different opinions, identification of
audience and purpose, and synthesis of ideas from multiple readings in order to formulate insights and connections. By studying the depth and complexity inherent in each text, you will gain a deeper understanding of your own thinking, writing, and role as an
individual in society. Writing instruction in this course will focus on narrative, informative/explanatory, and persuasive/argumentative writing, as well as the ability to draft, revise, peer edit, and publish well-developed, organized essays that reflect each student’s
individual voice, use standard English grammar and mechanics, and demonstrate a conscious selection of formal or informal voice, advanced vocabulary, and carefully formulated ideas. All areas of instructional focus are enriched through higher-level thinking and
shared inquiry.
