Accuplacer Early Testing Program

Brought to you through a partnership between the Anchorage School District and the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

Class of 2008

Class of 2007, Re-testing information

What the students in the class of 2008 should know...

Are you ready for college? Are the classes you are taking as a senior the classes that are needed for your next step?

Accuplacer is a reasonably priced way (only $10.00) to get a concrete view of what your college courses might look like if you were to start college without taking any additional reading, writing, or math classes in your senior year.

Beginning on April 3 and continuing through December 1st, Accuplacer testing will be offered at high schools throughout the Anchorage School District for students in the class of 2008. The schedule will be posted

                                                                  Parent information

You should take Accuplacer if:

You are a junior but have NOT yet taken the ACT or SAT

You are considering apprenticeship programs

You are considering technical training

You are planning to attend UAA

You don't have any idea what you want to do

You took the ACT/SAT/ but scored below 530 on the SAT or below 22 on the ACT

Statistics show that 30-50% of students entering 2 and 4 year college programs require remedial course work.

Students taking developmental/remedial courses are paying college tuition for classes that will not count for college credit (generally. 100 level classes and above are required for credit).

Some apprenticeship programs are now using Accuplacer results to determine eligibility and qualifications for their programs.

What parents should know...

Remember when you were in school and you learned something just long enough to take the test.   That process called rote learning stayed just long enough...

Your student may have done the same thing and may not have retained everything they've learned.

Unfortunately, with our nation's current emphasis on testing, some of our young adults may struggle with placement tests. Many two and four year schools and apprenticeship programs are now asking our sons and daughters to show once again what they know. For some, there may be a need to re-learn or refresh some skills before pursuing their goals.

Please encourage your senior to take a couple of hours to do a skills check using the Accuplacer as a measure.   As a great but unknown parent once said: "The best surprise is no surprise!"

If your student does find areas in which they need assistance, school counselors will provide information about their options immediately following the test.

If there are areas of concern, an awareness may be all that is needed to encourage further study before leaving high school. Senioritis may have to wait until June so that students may take advantage of   the opportunity to refresh skills in time for a second Accuplacer test in spring. This test will be available free of charge to any senior participating in the program.
