By default, you don’t have to select your user account and enter your password when you start up your Mac. When you add a new user, however, Mac OS X prompts you to turn off the automatic login feature. At this point, you can set the login window to ask you to type your name or choose it from a list. In either case, you’ll have to enter your password when logging in. The login window controls who can use the computer and what they have access to. Because the login window acts as the gatekeeper of the computer, it is important to always remember your password.
