If your computer is connected to an Ethernet network at your work or school, you need to enter the right settings before it can correctly communicate with the network or access the Internet. Where do you get these settings? Start by checking with the people who set up your network. They’ll give you the information you need to enter in the Network pane of System Preferences. All computers on a network have their own Internet address (known as an IP or network address). This unique number allows computers to communicate with each other and the Internet. You can manually enter the IP address, or have it automatically assigned by another computer on the network (known as a DHCP or BootP server).
