Using Locations

movie buttonpracticetips
If you have multiple ways of connecting to the Internet over the same network port (such as different AirPort networks at work, or two Internet service providers at home), you can set up each connection mode as a location, and then quickly switch between them. To go to a new location, simply select it from the Apple menu. Your network settings will be switched, and the new settings will become immediately available.

Creating a location is necessary only if you need to have different settings for the same network port. For example, if you connect to the Internet using a wireless connection at work or school, and then use a dialup connection at home, you don’t need to switch between these different networks. By default, Mac OS X looks for an active network connection and selects the correct one for you.
